Getting One's Bearings

Getting one's bearings to be an interesting visual statement , to be exact. Here we took a basic industrial commodity--machine shaft bearings-- and gave them a heroic stance for the cover of Advanced Bearing Technology's newest catalog.

Starting with Stillwater Creative Group's Bill and Nancy Creighton's request to create a strong image for the catalog, we submitted a range of ideas from spacey to hard edged to soft focus. Hard-edged got the nod, and thus three bearings were shot individually and assembled into this grouping. This provided several advantages, not the least of which was the fact that this approach was the only way to hold focus over the entire group. The ability to tweak the composition was just frosting on the cake.

After a few rounds of emails and prints and tweaking, we arrived at the finished cover shown here. The cloudscape was from an old stock file on hand at the studio, and fitted the mood of the image perfectly. The final image was submitted on disk.
