MPC Cover in Duotones

Kate Friedman Design, working with the Metropolitan Planning Council, envisioned a brochure printed in multiple duotone colors to depict the different efforts in which MPC is involved. Principal photography of the wooden blocks was shot in studio and the resulting films scanned. Other images from various sources were acquired and scanned for inclusion into the final visual of a block assembly with pictures on the wooden surfaces .

The central problem of composing such an assembly in CMYK colorspace using inks other than process colors lies in accurately viewing the image on screen. A special set of ink profiles was generated for viewing the files in Photoshop with purple, mustard and orange tones taking the place of Cyan, Yellow and Magenta respectively. The Black plate remained constant, and each part of the final image was composed of only the Black plate and one of the three custom inks.

After much tweaking and proofing, the final files were printed as 8.5 x 11 inch horizontals, bleeding four ways on the cover and two interior pages.

Other agencies and photographers contributing to the project were Michael Doering, Peoples Energy Corp., RTA/Matt Ferguson, Peter Kair, Openlands Project, Kathy Richland and Ron Schramm.
